The De-Construction/Re-Construction of Memory

In order to de-construct the colonial version of history it is imperative to examine the past from a purely Cameroonian point of view. The subject of this instillation is a new narrative examining the role of women as activists in postcolonial Cameroon.

In keeping with the strong oral tradition in Africa, girls from Cameroon re-navigate the path between the past and the present by examining images from the Buea Archive and retelling the stories shown in the Buea Archive photographs. The girls’ recorded statements play in the background while viewers walk among the free standing panels covered in collage elements of the archive photos. Together, the voices and images create a visual and oral account of the past. Thus, the new generation re-constructs a narrative in the framework of contemporary historical thinking.
